goto Baguio part 2

In the end, all we have are memories.

Ar, moi, Renz and Mar (insert Godwill and The General), Baguio crew 2023

The following year, the group was almost complete. Sadly, Estre didn’t make this time around. We invited Ar, and The General was able to join this trip. This time it wasn’t an impromptu one because we have planned it for weeks so everyone can free their schedules. We arrived in Baguio at past 8 in the morning.

The first stop was of course the Baguio Cathedral, no visit to Baguio is complete without visiting the cathedral. We’re just in time for a Sunday mass so we felt extra bless that day. Right after mass, we went to Bencab Museum.

If you’re an ultimate art enthusiast this is definitely a haven destination for you. There’s a lot of impressive exhibits and the beautiful view of nature is absolutely breathtaking. Un kahit wala kang gawin, ok na nakatanaw ka lang to a scenery of greens. It was a different experience.

For lunch that day, we brave the long queue at Good Taste Restaurant. Actually, there was no queue when we arrived and we were seated right away but it took an hour or so before our food was served. Un duling ka na sa gutom because our last meal was at 3am, pitstop at SCTEX. Although I prepared sandwiches which we consumed while on the road, we got super hangry with the activities we had so far. We ordered the famed Buttered Chicken, Chopsuey, Shanghai Lumpia, Hototay plus a big platter of fried rice. We felt relieved and ready to walk another 10 miles after eating a hearty meal. Good Taste Restaurant is worth your every penny. 😋

We stopped by The Mansion and Wright Park for photo ops before we headed to our homestay. This time I made sure our stay would be comfortable so I booked a condo unit at Bristle Ridge. It’s located in Pacdal, very near to tourist destinations like Botanical, Camp John Hay, etc.

Hannah Transient House in Bristle Ridge Condominium is a 2-bedroom unit with balcony. It’s spacious with a living area, dining, big T&B, kitchen (with complete utensils, cookware, microwave, electric kettle, water dispenser, ref). It’s very ideal especially if you’re planning to stay long kasi may washing machine pa sila. Also, parking wasn’t an issue because they will reserve 1 parking space for you, free of charge. Truly they make the ordinary, extraordinary.

Everyone wowed the place because it’s so cozy. If our schedule wasn’t that full, we can just spend our time here absolutely doing nothing, un tipong R & R lang talaga. In short, I highly recommend the place (check details at the end of this post). We get to rest and refresh before we went out again for our Christmas dinner.

I picked Hill Station at Casa Vallejo for our Christmas dinner. It’s rustic feel and warm ambiance speaks so much of Baguio city. A Miele Guide awardee I expect no less than excellent service and delicious flavors. We ordered steak and wine, a must because it’s a special dinner for the group. I especially enjoyed every bite of my juicy, tender and flavorful order of Australian Tenderloin.

Malakas talaga maka-sosyal pag steak ang kinakain, hindi tuloy nagawang magsakol ni Godwill (petname ni D3).🤣 We also got 2 kinds of salad just because one of my favorite food bloggers recommended it. Then the rest is history. It was a beautiful dinner. The only downside of dining at Hill Station, they should implement a strict dress code so as not to spoil the mood. My POV only because we followed cautiously, then some guests arrived in shorts and slippers. 🙄

After dinner we visited the Christmas Village at Baguio Country Club. It was a first to everyone (except Mar), the inner kid in me is happy. The BCC Christmas Village was colorful and bright, there were activities for the kids and the kids alike, there were live musical performances too but what I enjoyed here was the snow show. I don’t know with you but for someone who never experienced snow yet, this is winter wonderland. We didn’t stay long, after a quick round and another snow show we left. Entry fee is at the BCC Christmas Village is P150.

Guess who really did enjoy the fancy snow? 😁

We stopped by at the busy Session Road and walked, The General and Godwill were both hopeful to see the street performer that night (sorry, I forgot the name). While walking we saw some dressed in Pokemon costumes and thought that this is fun. Fun enough to plan our own theme (team) next holiday season. Kaya abangan nyo!

Anyhow, we didn’t stay long in Session Road. I requested to drop by Vizco’s and bought a Strawberry Shortcake. We went back to our condo unit and cap off the night with coffee and cake all across a light and meaningful conversation. It was a goodnight.

We were up early the next day, it’s pasalubong shopping of course. While we’re finishing our bargain hunting, The General and Godwill went ahead and had take out at Good Taste so we have something to eat before we check out that day. Truth is I’ve been drooling onto that pancit order that we were not able to try. So yey! Finally a taste of it and it was so tasty. We paired it with hot pandesal and the leftover buttered chicken. 😋

At 11am we’re out, we’re headed at Dominican Hill this time to visit Mirador Heritage and Eco Spiritually Park. It’s one of Baguio’s newest attraction, prepare to trek inside a bamboo forest and rock gardens to get the breathtaking view of Baguio city. The highlight of the trek was the Mirador Hill Peace Memorial, featuring a traditional Japanese gate called torii.⛩ Entry Fee is P100 per pax.

Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto is on the other side of the eco park, you won’t miss it at the exit.

From Marcos Highway, we drove going to La Trinidad to visit another touristy attraction. The Colors of Stobosa, is a community that sits atop a hilly part. It featured the paintwork of multiple houses; this artwork was designed by the Tam-awan Village group. The visit was very quick, after the photo op we left to avoid being the cause of traffic jam in the area. The General was very amazed and had been wondering how on earth these houses were built, pinoproblema nya paano daw hinakot ang mga materials hanggang taas.😅

From The Colors of Stobosa, we went straight to the slaughter house for late lunch. From La Trinidad going back to Baguio City, you’ll pass by this area so it’s really very obvious that lunch that day would be The General’s pick. And for the win, of course it’s Balajadia Kitchenette. For first-timers like Godwill, Mar and Ar the place doesn’t look impressive because it’s literally a hole-in-the-wall kind, wait until they try the bestsellers. Sabi nga ni Godwill, babalik tayo ng Baguio para lang kumain dito. 😁 Food at Balajadia is undeniably very delicious, authentic if I may add. It’s where the champions really dine.

Eduard Folayang of Team Lakay x The General of GOTO Klab 😂

We planned to use Kennon Road on our way back to Manila but we were stopped by uniformed men because it’s not passable. Despite that we were able to cross Camp 6 just to see the Lion’s Head. I’ve been many times to Baguio City but this is the first time to see this statue. It’s a prominent landmark by the local organization, the Lion’s Club. It’s a must for tourist to stop and have his photo taken here, so we did.

Baguio City is love. It’s for the old souls. I will keep coming back to celebrate life, to nurture friendship and to make memories that will be remembered for a long, long time. One day, I will fulfill one of my dreams and I will write my heart out here.💗

Life’s update 😔

A week ago, Estre passed away, her body gave up after enduring so much discomfort the past weeks. And tho we have prepared for this even before, it was still a heartbreaking one. The only consolation I have was I was able to say goodbye properly. I told her that I’m praying for her but if it’s really meant to happen, may God rescue her and grace brings peace. I told her how much she meant to me, how much I miss her and will going to miss her. I told her to pray and pray. And rest if she feels very tired. For the first time, I cried heavily in front of her. That was our last convo because she was driving us away, she doesn’t want us to see her in so much pain. 😟

I organized a prayer vigil together with some of our high school batchmates.

Her passing was of mixed emotions, the feeling of grief and relief. Grief is understandable but yes relief because finally her suffering has ended. I’m thankful that she’s now in a much better place. I’m thankful that she’s now cancer-free and finally at rest.

And tho it ended because it’s God’s plan, I felt sorry because even if we could, we didn’t see her one last time. I’m sorry if there was an occasion in the past I have taken her for granted. I’m sorry that we couldn’t bring her to the beach any longer.

I was asked to deliver a eulogy during the last night of the funeral wake and I thought it would be good to share here my last messages to her, sent thru messenger.

Estre, GOTO Klab will forever miss you. 💔

goto Baguio part 1

Estre, moi, Mayora, Renz (insert Hen), Baguio crew 2022

I don’t know about you but travelling and staying in Baguio is something I would never get tired of. The last time we visited I was even joking my friends about staying in Baguio for a month and live like a local. I think it would be a good escape from my daily routine, from all the distress at home and would be a nice time out to all my social activities. Honestly, despite of all the conveniences I am having while working from home I sometimes miss my city life because of the little privacy I get to enjoy every waking day. Instances that I don’t need to worry about a stained floor and grimy bathroom, I don’t need to worry about dinner because I can just eat whatever there is. Days that I don’t need to worry about so many things (everything). I miss our little apartment and its uncomplicated atmosphere.

Christmas dinner at Hill Station, Casa Vallejo

Anyways, because a Baguio trip is a must for me. My GOTO fam enlist it as a yearly destination. During our last visit we held there our yearly Christmas dinner, instead of the original plan of going fancy in a posh hotel in the metropolis. For this year, the plan is even more festive and we’re so looking forward to it. Abangan nyu na lang si Spiderman! 😂 The things you do when you get older nga naman. 🤣

Following are the stories and snaps of our Baguio trip in August 2022 and November 2023.

Lunch at Asiong Caviteño

The Baguio trip in August 2022 was an impromptu one. We were having lunch with Hen, who just arrived from abroad when out of the blue Baguio was mentioned and the rest was history. It was a very short vacay but was a very memorable one.

We left hometown at 2am and was totally on track with our itinerary until a wrong turn. Un muntik ng naging Vigan ang destination namin. Arriving Baguio at almost 8am, chilly weather because it was also raining, we first visited Baguio Cathedral and brave the pilgrim stairs down to Session Road where we had a quick breakfast at McDonald’s. Hindi pa kami nasiyahan we challenge the 105 steps going up the cathedral this time. It was really a prayerful ascent because we’re out of breath. Kamatay!

Then we did the customary touristy activities –The Mansion, Wright Park and Mines View. For lunch, I brought them to Balajadia Kitchenette located at the Slaughter House. It was a favorite because of its authentic taste so I know they would definitely love the food as well. We had dinuguan, dinakdakan, inihaw na liempo and kalderetang kambing. We headed to our homestay right after.

Europa Legarda Condominium is only minutes away to town proper, we had a secure parking space and nice villas. The downside that surprised us big time, di naman kami na-inform na we have to take another steep stairway going to our unit. 😅 It was a lesson learned, when a deal is so good to be true you have to thoroughly asked the location and mention about your hate for stairs. We spent an hour to rest and freshen up. We gave Hen, our dedicated driver the entire trip, an ample time to take a nap.

posing with Estre’s new Ford Territory.

At past 4pm, we headed to Choco-Late de Batirol in Camp John Hay for a late afternoon snack. We had the usual, the traditional blend, paired with my favorite bibingka. Our last stop that day was SM City before we went back to our rented villas. We still wanted to go out that night but the thought of going up the stairs, no way! The sleep that night was very cold, good thing that I packed an extra blanket.

In the morning, we just had coffee, cup noodles and bread. The first stop that day was Baguio Market for the accustomed pasalubong shopping followed by a big brunch at Silantro, an old favorite Fil-Mex restaurant. I actually spotted it the night before we went back to our villas and I was even thinking of us making a stop but the thought that my party was tired and sleepy I discarded the idea. Only to find out that Renz was also thinking the same thing. I miss Silantro because the branch in Tagaytay closed years, right after Taal erupted in 2020.

After brunch we visited one of Baguio’s newest tourist attraction –The Igorot Stone Kingdom. I suggest you drive here at early morning or late afternoon because it’s quite hot in the area at midday. No enough shade to sit down, the structure is similar to Banaue terraces. Not advisable for seniors because you have to climb at the higher station just to get a good view of the whole place. Aside from the photo op with Igorot clothes there’s really nothing to do here, good way to pass the time. Entry fee is P100 which I find not really cheap.

Before heading home, we made another trip to Camp John Hay. That vacay led to many and even tho we’re not complete during the first Baguio holiday it was a good trip, we enjoyed the whole time. Estre was very happy and well that time, I miss her bubbly nature even more. 😔

To be continued…

holy week thoughts

Closed another quarter at work today, and in a few days, March will officially end. And before we know it, we’re welcoming April already. Summer and all its bloom. But before that, the Holy Week came earlier this year. Ash Wednesday coincides with Valentine’s Day and I spent it with my GOTO friends.

We visited Estre, brought snacks so we can partly celebrate V-day with her. That visit was actually a crushing one, I was holding my tears the entire time we were there. Estre, as you know, has been battling the big C for years now, she had been going on treatments until early last year she decided to stop with chemo’s. She felt really tired of it and decided to take a different approach. However, mid of last year her health really started to decline. She was in and out of MMC until she was placed under comfort care. Her doctors don’t want to give her certainties as to how long she still has. The reason why is that we also believe she can still come back strong one of these days. But like I said, that visit was too heavy. It was the first time to see her in so much pain, teary-eyed as she silently wished death. And honestly, I prayed the same that moment. If it’s really God’s will, I prayed that her suffering would end. Nakakadurog ng puso to see a very jolly and strong person go through this. We left her house all feeling blue.

Ash Wednesday mass with our heart clips

Valentine’s dinner at LieSil’s Restaurant & Events

We went to Ash Wednesday mass right after and later on had dinner to lighten the mood. Little did I know, I wasn’t really alone feeling all the emotions because even the least emotive person in the group was moved. I didn’t sleep well that night because Estre was really on my thoughts. Two weeks later, we went back to see her again and she was totally in a different state. I saw how her eyes lit up seeing us again. Alam mo un feeling na, how can you let go of someone when that person keeps on fighting. And with God’s miracle nothing is really impossible. I always tell her to pray and pray. Last week we were able to see her again and she was even tougher this time. I’m still praying for her, always.

As we commemorate Lent and all the sacrifices of Jesus for our sins, may all of us do penance. It’s not very hard to give up something for a while, it doesn’t feel bad either to share something to the needy and lastly, praying won’t take too much of your time. On Easter, as Jesus miraculously rose again I pray for Estre’s miracle.

Ilocos, Holy Week 2023

Anyhow, tomorrow is the start of the Holy Week break. We have no definite plans for the next two days. We skipped Ilocos after our “Carmaggedon” adventure last year. We’re supposed to have a modest picnic with the GOTO people but something came up so we cancelled it. Truth is, sometimes those cancellations are a blessing in disguise because that means I can stay late in bed without worrying about the time and commitments. I can run errands. I can sit for hours doing nothing. Let’s see how it goes tomorrow. For now, let’s snuggle down in a nice and comfy bed. Goodnight folks!

leap day! February 29th 2024

I once wrote in 2012 how I pictured the coming leap years would be for me –a new car, a new home, a trip abroad and local trips, career advancement, a healthy mind and soul, and a happy marriage. All hope for a better life and if I would look back, probably some things didn’t happen the way I see or expect them to be but I think I won.

I still have a very trusty AUV that can still climb mountains and race with your SUVs.

My home may not be immaculately fresh but remained a beautiful landmark in my side of the country.

I visited Taiwan in 2016 and Singapore in 2018, if the pandemic didn’t happen there were trips lined up in 2020. But no regrets, let’s hope we can fly and visit the neighboring countries this year, or maybe next year or the year after this year. Fingers crossed.

There were plenty of local trips every year –from Ilocos, to La Union, to Baguio, to nearby Batangas and Laguna, and to the far-flung countryside of the Bicol region.

I may not be at my prime but no major illnesses so far, except for hormonal changes, hot flashes and mood changes. You know what I mean. I turned 50, by the way.

I lost Bea in 2018, in the same year I also lost Astro and the Lucky Boy. I thought I wouldn’t want another dog again because it’s always too painful when they go. In 2019, I got Bibo and Pabu. My beautiful boys. My sunshine. I’m lucky to be Mama to both of them.

I am now living the life I’ve been dreaming only before. Coming home to my hometown and enjoying the simplicity of life every day, near to family and friends. In a matter of a year, I will mark my 25th work anniversary in ICS. It’s been a journey that I would always love to look back on. Thank you to my employer. ♥

And what I hold onto, despite and in spite of, I still believe in happy marriages and ever after. You only lose when you give up. ♥♥♥

’til the next leap!

goto Bicol part 1

February kita kits, Valentine’s Day at Crosswinds.

Another February kita kits during Arlene’s advance birthday celebration.

I thought I was over it and even thought I’m too old now to say yes to new adventures but not recently. Tho it wasn’t really an impromptu getaway with my GOTO Klab family (planned it in February during our several meet ups) there were still uncertainties up until the last minute. First, the dates were moved a week earlier than the original schedule. Second, there were clashes of schedule because of the rearrangements. And lastly, the car we’re supposed to use was still in the shop for maintenance and repair. With all the challenges we’re up to we thought of just considering the original schedule. But heavens must be on our side because we’re able to fix everything and sort out all the necessities in 3 days.😅 Kaya, let’s go!

We left hometown at 1am of Apr 21, thank you for the holiday! Dennis was driving during the first leg, his partner, Marie on the passenger seat. Backseat was Estre, Renzy and me while Henry and Greg took the rear backseats. This sitting arrangement was even planned a day before.😁 I prepared the itinerary, essentials and budget 2 days prior and sent it to everyone. I also booked homestays in Daraga and Naga, respectively. I like things in order, even the smallest details of marking my clothes with the day I’m scheduled to wear it. I noticed that as I aged I became more and more OC, which I don’t know if it’s bringing me relief or stress at the end of the day.

Breakfast at a side road eatery, medyo nahiya kami nyang ilabas ang bug-ong namin 😅

Anyhow, the itinerary I prepared wasn’t so strict after all. I told the group that we can skip other activities and go freely, it’s just that it helps if we have something to follow to avoid time wasters. At around 3am we were already in Pagbilao, there was traffic build up despite that early because of road constructions. Before 6am we were already in Antimonan and stopped to a small eatery beside the road to have coffee and eat the Tapsilog I prepared for everyone. You see, I’m really a packer and a girl scout at the same time. I also baked banana bread so we have something sweet to eat later that day.

After a few stretching and toilet break, we’re back on the road. This time I took the passenger seat and Henry was driving. I don’t know but I feel safer when Henry was driving because he’s used to drive with VIPs and I feel he’s more cautious. Si Dennis kasi the typical driver you’ll meet, kaskasero although very alert. I like passenger seat syempre because I can see the whole road and I like navigating and giving directions (minsan pde ko ng palitan si Waze). At 8am, we were already at the gateway of Bicolandia, we stopped to take photos because it’s a must for first timers and to help me documents this trip easily. From the arc, we travelled another 3 more hours to reach Naga. But before reaching Naga, we stopped in Gainza, the town before Naga to have lunch at the house of Dennis’ colleague. It was an eat and run event, although nakakahiya because the family was very welcoming. They have beautiful Alaskan Malamutes and lunch was super cool. Thank you po. 🥰

We passed by Naga and continued our way to Legazpi City. Mayon Volcano was so visible from the road, although its peak was covered with thick clouds the excitement was ramping up. I couldn’t contain it and was so happy to reach this far even if I get an unsolicited advice that going to Bicol just to see Mayon was so ordinary now. Mind you, it’s majestic for me because it’s my first time to see it in the flesh. And even if some of my friends have seen it before, it’s memorable this time because we’re all together now witnessing this God’s masterpiece.

We arrived in our Daraga homestay just 5 mins behind from our supposed checked in time. After a breeze checked in, we were ushered to our room. Mayon Lodging House was actually not my first choice, I initially made booking at Casa Bicolandia Suites because of it’s location, amenities and good reviews but we were cancelled in the morning of Apr 20 because of a COVID-19 outbreak according to Agoda. Imagine the hassle, buti na lang Mayon Lodging House was so easy to book. I just called them and inquired and paid the 50% down payment only. I got us a family room so we could save, besides for trips like this we only need a space to keep our things and a bed to sleep at night. And a decent bathroom of course. Mayon Lodging House actually offers more, they have an open kitchen complete with utensils, dining and grilling area, drinking water plus free wifi and parking. It is also conveniently located along the highway and the best part, Mayon was so visible from the rooftop. I highly recommend this homestay not just because of its amenities and location, staffs are super friendly too, so it’s a plus, plus, point! 🤍

Mayon from our homestay (Mayon Lodging House)

Mayon from Quituinan Hills

After an hour of rest and snacks we decided to go out and explore the city. But we didn’t miss the opportunity to capture Mayon on the roof top of the lodging house. I don’t know with your but it’s so magical, nakaka-happy ng sobra. Our first stop that afternoon was Quituinan Hills, I read that you get the best view of Mayon here during the afternoon and it didn’t disappoint. Mayon was so clear and picturesque. Entrance is P50 and parking is P30 only. Truth is, we’re supposed to go to Lingnon Hill but Waze was not working right and kept giving us a different ending. 😩

We get to enjoy the rest of the afternoon here; the place is actually perfect for picnics kaya lang we’re not ready because we didn’t bring food except for the lone pack of Mr. Chips which Henry slipped before we went out. We were supposed to check the Japanese Tunnel too but it wasn’t available that time. We stayed for an hour I think and head after to Daraga Church. The mass just ended when we arrived and the church was closed already so we were not able to peek inside. It’s quite getting dark then and getting a good photo was a challenge.

Nuestra Señora de la Porteria Parish Church commonly known as Daraga Church

From Daraga Church, Mayon was so visible and it’s quite a view. If we made it earlier we could have a beautiful frame of the old church and the volcano. After we lit candles, we went our way to look for a pharmacy because everyone was feeling down, I guess we’re all tired from the 12-hr trip and even before we travelled I was already nursing a bad flu (except that I never had fever). We ended at LCC Mall in Legazpi and had dinner there before we went back to our homestay.

clockwise: pansit bato, pangat, tinutungang manok & laing

I actually scouted 1st Colonial Grill because they serve authentic Bicol recipes according to reviews apart from they have the famed sili ice cream. So, our first encounter of the authentic Bicol express, laing and pangat was a hit, everything was really flavorful. And to break the rich flavors of Bicol we also ordered the Colonial Liempo (grilled liempo). Another dish very new to us was the Tinutungang Manok, it’s a native chicken dish cooked in coconut cream. It’s flavorful but I’m more focused to eating Bicol express and Pansit Bato. 😋

And that this dinner at 1st Colonial Grill wouldn’t be complete without trying the sili ice cream. We got a single order because we just want to experience it. When you order the sili ice cream you get to choose what level of spiciness from Level 1-3 and the Volcano.  We got Level 3 and a scoop is enough, anghang! The ice cream was very creamy pero un flavors talaga it was explosive! 🥵

We also dropped by the Embarcadero de Legazpi but there was nothing to see there. I think we spotted two resto from the entrance and that’s it. Maybe at day time it’s ok to go here because the place offers one of the best views of Mayon from the bay.

Roof deck of Mayon Lodging House enjoying 3-1 coffee paired with my banana bread

Right after dinner we head back to our homestay, even if we wanted some drinks outside we felt that our energies were too low, must be the lack of sleep and the humid Bicol weather. Anyhow, we’re packed the next day so we need our sore bodies to heal and recharge.

The next day (Apr 22), Marie was already up by 5am and had taken her bath. Because we share one shower area only, we needed to double time so we can leave by 7am and start our adventure. While we were taking turns in the shower, our maasikaso drayber made coffee for everyone. How thoughtful eh ☺ Kaya I love these friends because no one is boss, no one is tamad, everyone always does his part.

Our first stop that day was Sumlang Lake, said to be one of the places with pristine view of Mayon. We’re actually one of the first visitors that day so we were able to explore the area untangle. You can go on balsa rides here or just stay at the cottages near the lake. The atmosphere here was so relaxing, and despite the warm Bicol weather we were able to walk around. I read somewhere that there’s a cultural demo here but we didn’t catch one. There’s also a café and a souvenir shop inside but the items here are quite pricey. We didn’t really stay too long at this site so after taking too many photos we left and head to Cagsawa Ruins. For reference, entrance fee at Sumlang Lake is P100 per pax, parking fee is P30.

If you’re not in a hurry, getting around Sumlang Lake is recommended. It’s pretty peaceful in here but there isn’t much to do.

From Camalig, Albay it was a 15- minute drive to Cagsawa Ruins so it’s basically close by. It was nearly 9am when we reach the ruins and Mayon was very shy, hiding from the clouds.

bago ang lahat, nag-group photo muna kami. it feels surreal to be here! 😍

A lot of tourist was also around so I thought it will be difficult for us to have a decent photo with the remnants of the old church. But we were approached right away by a freelance photographer who later on took all our pictures, trick shots and snap shots that we all wowed. The freelance photog did not give us his or any rate for the services, instead he only requested for a donation fee. Since we enjoyed the shots and shoot itself we gave him P500 for the services. Actually, we weren’t able to explore the ruins ground that far because it was too hot already. We also skipped the ATV ride because my party think it’s unsafe. So right after our photo op, we looked for a resto to sit down and have brunch. I included Gotohan sa Cagsawa in our itinerary but later on found out that its name was changed to Zekie’s Gotohan.

clockwise: Bicol express crispy, grilled salmon, pansit bato, pinangat, adobong pusit sa gata

Because it was really humid at their dining area, we requested a set-up under a shaded tree, a little distant from their kitchen. We ordered Bicol express, Special Pinangat, Grilled Salmon, adobong pusit sa gata and Pansit Bato. Probably one of the best meals we had in Bicol. 🤍

i don’t know if we really got these bags on super bargain price. heniway, it’s prettier than it looks.

Of course, we didn’t the skip the pasalubong shopping before leaving Cagsawa. We bought from the shops outside the gate because we felt it’s cheaper compared to the shops inside the ruins. We got pili nuts, pili tarts, native fans (pay-pay), house slippers made from abacca, souvenir shirts, key chains, ref magnets, wallets, matching bags and panghilod na bato. I just realized that Tatang Greg was really looking forward to this pasalubong shopping, maybe more than we do. 😂

Since we’re schedule to check out by 12nn, we went back to our homestay by 11:30am to freshen up and pack our things so we can leave for Naga in time. To be continued

a Christmas dinner: Taal Vista Hotel

Let’s go back to my very festive December and celebrate Christmas in March 😊 . Kiddin’ aside, since the opening of businesses in 2022 many of my friends were excited to hold a get-together x Christmas Party. It’s one of the occasions we’ve missed because of the pandemic.

Although in 2020 while the quarantine was still very strict we were able to hold a very quick one inside Treats in Petron-Kaybagal (Tagaytay). Actually, it wasn’t the initial plan but the restos closing time was too early and it’s a no choice for us but to park in the gas station and enjoy treats from Kambal pandesal + instant coffee while we had our Kris Kringle. Such a joy to see friends that time amidst the surge of COVID-19.

And finally, after two years, we were able to celebrate as it should be. After the government’s EO last October that the wearing of masks is now voluntary except in healthcare facilities, we were able to plan a Christmas get-together without further ado.

Our initial plan was to hold our mini-party in the metro so that our dear Marie can join but later on cancelled after the latter couldn’t make it even if we go our way and make the adjustments. So, to cut the story short we decided for Taal Vista Hotel. Bakit nga ba sa Taal Vista? First, we stick to the original plan to hold the Christmas get-together in a hotel. Second, because of proximity. And lastly, so we can dress up and go fancy. Unlike before, we normally meet during early evening, this time we agreed that we meet at mid-afternoon so we can call it a day earlier and avoid any Cinderella incident. 😂

There were a lot of people when we arrived at the hotel vicinity, especially at the viewing deck. Though I’m not really sure if everyone were really check-in hotel guests or diners like us or probably some were just stopping by. It’s a good thing that the hotel has plenty of open spaces so we don’t need to blend in one spot. Honestly, I can’t remember the last time I went to this hotel, it’s really been ages. There’s still a Jollibee store back then and the Casino was still housed here, maybe 20 years ago na. 😁 I always wanted to schedule a staycation here but because we live nearby it’s never been an option.

Taal Vista Hotel remains to be one of Tagaytay’s landmarks, some areas may be outdated already but the hotel remains charming. Nostalgic. Historic. And I still fantasize about staying here. Who knows this write-up might be a ticket for me to a staycation soon. Hello, Taal Vista Hotel. 😍

sorna Tatang G for this photo, buti na lang you don’t do social media so much 😂

Anyhow, back to our mini get-together, mini because the other half of the group didn’t make it —Dennis and Henry were still abroad while Marie and Estre had prior schedules. My first choice was to dine at Taza Fresh Table which is located at the garden wing (?) but we were told that they will close early that day following an event. So, we moved to Veranda where we spent the next four hours eating and talking. Unfortunately, buffet dining was not offered yet so we ordered pizza and pasta plates. No regrets!

Lasagna Bolonese P430.00, Liguine Carbonara P480.00, Quattro Formaggi P830.00 and Seafood Pizza P650.00

I will give a 9/10 for the food because everything tasted really good, although I didn’t expect much especially on the pizza. But lo and behold I was even telling ze husband that they really make use of good quality and generous amount of cheese because I can taste each (mozzarella, gorgonzola, parmesan & fontina) in every bite! The carbonara was sooo creamy, you’ll definitely would want more garlic bread dipped into its creamy sauce.

Veranda menu HERE.

If you’re wondering why we didn’t order their famed heirloom dishes, personally because we live nearby and I can concoct those recipes at the comfort of my kitchen anytime. I find it impractical to order sinigang, adobo and embotido except for the crispy pata, mahirap tong gawin 😅. Sorry but it’s just me and my party. Generally, we really enjoyed the mood (good food = good mood) —it’s very relaxed as it matched the fresh surroundings. A repeat is a must!

We could have stayed at the Alta Ridge Bar for a few drinks and enjoyed live music but we worried about catching flu. You see we’re no longer at our prime, truth is we’re welcoming the golden year but we’re thankful that we don’t have any major illnesses so far. Truly, the first wealth is health. 💛

Eto un part na masasabi mong, Iba talaga pag tumatanda na tayo noh, gusto na lang natin ng tahimik na buhay at mga sampung milyon! Ganun! 🤑

Seriously, I don’t like the night life now, I don’t like loud and crowded places. I think I am already too old for that. Besides I spent many years in the city and during the latter part of it I always dreamt of coming home. And just like that God heard my ultimate wish! The pandemic wasn’t that bad for me because I was able to work from home, which means a better work-life balance and more productive me because I can oversee the household every day. And I became closer to friends because I can have coffee with them anytime of the week.

So, it’s one down, there’s a lot of Christmas gatherings I attended last December and I hope I can write everything in one go. 😘

P.S. It’s almost Holy Week, as I’ve mentioned in my last post we’re North bound. No solid plans yet so let’s see once we’re there. So, where you up to?

forty-nine

I turned 49 two weeks ago and it feels surreal because I was able to tick off a thing on my last year’s bucket list. If you have read my last year’s birthday post you’ll get what I mean. 😀

Since my birthday fell on a weekend I threw a small lunch party at home. Unlike in the past, my maternal family was always present during occasions, this time I chose to celebrate silently with my closest friends only. Why? Because I don’t have the energy to entertain too many people at the same time and secondly, I don’t have the resources to invite too many so I think keeping a small guest list is best. Coincidentally, a relative of ours was also celebrating a birthday (and baptismal of his grandchild) over lunch at Hotel M’s clubhouse so most of the relatives didn’t actually felt the social exclusion. ✌

So, to make the party short and simple, I prepared a lunch spread that friends will talk for days which I think will produce feel-good chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, 😛 seriously tho I ordered my happy food because it’s my birthday!

Pancit for long life, puto for purity, fish fingers for stability, balance and tranquility, beef biryani and butter chicken masala for differences and divergences, charcuterie for fascination and visual appeal, lechon to brightens the party and cakes (and sweets) to celebrate this milestone. Wala ba akong na-miss ipaliwanag, guise?

*Sansrival cake from Gay Vasquez (i’ll do a review of it next time, it’s highly recommended), Sansrival from Goldilocks sent by my team including the bouquet of roses, Luscious Caramel cake (Goldilocks din to) given by my hs girlfriends (LEARA).

Classic Ube Cake of The Pastry Company from Rosette, Caramia’s Midnight Dream from my boss and last but not the least That Ooey Gooey Chocolate Cake from one of my agents. Pwede bang mas bongga pa next year 😁

My girlfriends from high school was complete, so it was like another mini-reunion for us.

Three from my GOTO Klab fam came (ok, they’re four becos Mayora is part of it na nga pala). These are the friends I call my constants becos we go out a lot. Tho it’s hard to complete this group because two are always out of the country (missin’ my birthday were madam M, D3 & Henry).

Gem from my PILTEA friends came also, I’m so thankful that he never forgets and always find time. He stayed late and we had coffee in Tagaytay to cap off the night.

My birthday gratitude list:

  • Long time friends
  • My two bois (Bibo & Pabu) who gives me headaches and happiness every single day
  • My job and the working arrangement I’m privilege to have
  • My B (broom broom, skirt skirt) for continuing his safe service and endless journeys.
  • All the trips I made last year (Batangas & Laguna during the Holy Week, Ilocos & La Union in May and Baguio in August) and to more travels this year.
  • Hotel K for making my life easier and sleep comfortable.
  • All my struggles and disappointments, plans that didn’t go as expected —but left me with important life lessons and realizations.
  • My perfectly imperfect family.
  • The silence I get to enjoy at 5am.
  • My husband and the small stuff he’s up that steals my sanity. Yes, despite and in spite of I still love him because he does the same. Salamat sa pa-lechon! 😘

LEARA x GOTO Klab

Serious na guise, I’m thankful for this birthday because turning a year is a huge blessing. Thank you, universe for being so kind and generous despite my failings. Thank you, Lord for all my life’s blessings. 💖

Happy birthday to me! 🥧

I don’t mind getting older;

it’s a privilege denied to so many!

P.S. I gifted myself a Criselda Lontok piece becos I feel its age appropriate and very timely for the company event next month. So, don’t judge my spending. 😛
